In 2000, New York designer Sandy Chilewich introduced her first woven textiles to the international design community. Each year her collection grows through her tireless experimentation and passion for different manufacturing techniques. “I am continually exploring for new materials that combine beauty and functionality and for underutilized manufacturing processes that, with design input, can be modernized,” says Chilewich. Now producing a growing range of products using innovative textiles, Chilewich has unquestionably redefined how the world dresses its tables and covers its floors. The brand is recognized and revered internationally for modern design, ease of care and the durability of its products.
Chilewich defines quality
100% of Chilewich woven products are made in the USA. Our textiles are made into tabletop and flooring designs with state of the art equipment in our own facility, and under our watchful eye ensuring the highest quality.
Chilewich is making a significant environmental development by replacing the petroleum-based plasticizers in our yarns with phthalate-free, renewable vegetable compounds. We call these innovative new yarns and the fabrics made from them Terrastrand™.
TerraStrand™ is 100% phthalate-free, and contains 25% vegetable content.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Since 1997
The New York based designer Sandy Chilewich is founder and creative director of Chilewich | Sultan LLC, a company managed with her partner and husband Joe Sultan. For the last three decades and with two distinct businesses, Chilewich has reinterpreted underutilized and overlooked manufacturing practices. Since 2000, Chilewich has designed innovative textiles for numerous applications.
Sandy launched placemats and floormats with her original signature textiles in 2000. Her designs have transformed the way tables are dressed in homes and in restaurants around the world. Her floormats provided a clean modern alternative underfoot.
If you had asked Joe Sultan when he was a practicing architect with his own firm in New York City, what he would be doing today, he would never have said he would be the CEO of Chilewich | Sultan LLC, a textile design company best known for contemporary place settings and modern flooring.
Though Joe didn’t realize it then, his fate lay with the textile industry. His father and uncles owned and operated a company based in NYC, selling tablecloths and placemats. He worked for them after school and during vacations from the time he was a child through his teens.

CHILEWICH GREEN STATEMENT
We have made great progress in becoming “green”. Some examples of Chilewich’s green initiatives are listed below:
TERRASTRAND®
Chilewich is making a significant environmental development by replacing the petroleum- based plasticizers in our yarns with 100%phthalate-free, and 25%renewable vegetable compounds.
Plasticizers have traditionally been made from petroleum-based compounds that are used to make PVC yarns soft. No more. We call these innovative new yarns and the fabrics made from them TerraStrand. Every square yard of TerraStrand® saves .02 gallons of petroleum and .41 pounds of CO2 as compared to conventional woven vinyls.
PLYNYL® FLOOR TILES WITH BIOFELT® + TERRASTRAND®
BioFelt® is a PVC-free floor tile backing system developed by Chilewich that works with all our signature woven textiles. The backing for the floor tile is made from recycled water bottles, renewable vegetable compounds, as well as post-industrial materials. The total recycled content of the tile (including TerraStrand® fabric and BioFelt® backing) exceeds 55%.
GREENGUARD®
Chilewich upholstery fabrics are covered by the internationally recognized GreenGuard® program certified by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute. The goal of GreenGuard® is to protect human health and quality of life through the reduction of chemical exposure and improve indoor air quality.
MICROBAN®
All Chilewich Contract products contain Microban® antimicrobial protection. Microban® works continuously for the lifetime of the product to inhibit the growth of stain- and odor- causing bacteria, mold and mildew. Microban® is ideal for any home, healthcare, hospitality or office environment where mold and mildew are a concern.
GREEN LABEL PLUS
Chilewich Plynyl® wall-to-wall and tile flooring are Green Label Plus certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute. These guidelines are written to protect indoor air quality by mandating low VOC products. The certification is rigorously enforced by mandatory testing four times a year. Green Label Plus certification is recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council and therefore Chilewich wall-to-wall and tile flooring earn LEED points. All Chilewich Contract products are installed using low VOC adhesives.
